Flywheel Replacement
A flywheel is a mechanical device that is designed to store rotational energy effectively. Because of their moment of inertia, flywheels resist variations in rotating speed. In reciprocating engines, for example, car flywheels are needed because the active torque from the individual pistons is intermittent.
Dual Mass Flywheel
A dual-mass flywheel (DMF) is a rotating mechanical device that provides continuous energy (rotational energy) in systems where the energy source is not continuous, similar to how a conventional flywheel works, but with the added benefit of damping any violent variations in torque or revolutions that could cause unwanted vibration.
What Does a Dual Mass Flywheel Do?
The primary purpose of the dual mass flywheel is to decrease noise and vibration. The DMF functions as a mechanical "sponge," with two flywheel masses coupled by a series of high-strength springs dampening vibrations and harshness in the driveline. The springs between the flywheel masses absorb (at least somewhat) any roughness. A dual mass flywheel might be thought of as a shock absorber: each flywheel has a solid connection, but there is a "soft" spring between them that absorbs some of the jolt from accelerations, gear changes, and so on.
How can you determine if there's a problem with the flywheel?
- When driving and the clutch slips.
- When you are unable to change gears.
- When the clutch is engaged or disengaged, the transmission creates an odd noise.
- When the starter motor is having difficulty rotating the flywheel.
When should you consider replacing your flywheel?
Changing the clutch usually necessitates the replacement of the flywheel. Most of the time, when the clutch is worn or broken, the flywheel suffers as a result. If the flywheel is not replaced at the same time as the clutch, the new clutch may be damaged. As a result, a replacement is required at the same time, as most technicians prescribe.
When the clutch pedal judders or vibrates when depressed, it's usually a clue that something's wrong with the flywheel, especially if the problem occurs in first gear. Aside from that, the starting ring gear (the teeth surrounding the plate's out edge) on the flywheel might be destroyed by wear. Occasionally, a tooth will break, preventing the starter motor's gear from gripping correctly, resulting in vehicle starting issues.
Of course, if you think you might require a flywheel replacement but aren't sure, you should have Car Service and Repair inspect the issue first. In any event, always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions.
What happens when a flywheel has to be replaced?
The clutch and flywheel will be inspected and tested by Car Service and Repair.
If the flywheel needs to be replaced, Car Service and Repair will let you know.
When the clutch is engaged or disengaged, the transmission creates an odd noise.
The mechanic pulls the gearbox from the engine and, if required, replaces the flywheel.
Car Service and Repair can tell you whether additional parts, such as the clutch plate, need to be changed and give you an estimate.
Car Service and Repair will inspect the flywheel and clutch operation as well as test drive the vehicle.
If required, the mechanic will make changes.
How much does it cost to replace a flywheel?
Having to bring your vehicle to the garage is sometimes the toughest part of getting it fixed. As a result, we are pleased to provide a free collection and delivery service to our clients. If you schedule a collection, we will pick up your vehicle from your home or place of business, drive it to our facility, do any required work (after consulting with you), and return it to you at the end of the day.
For a modest cost, we can tow, jump start, or repair your car if it is having troubles or has broken down. If we are unable to start your car, we may arrange for a local recovery company to collect it at a very reasonable cost.
Don't want to ruin your day off?
You don't have enough time to get your vehicle serviced or repaired?
Do you have trouble getting to and from your garage?
With our Free Collection and Delivery Service, we can collect from either your place of work or your home location, and we feel we provide a valued product at Car Service and Repair. Please contact us if you are unclear whether the address from which you wish to have your car collected is within our service area.
Car Service and Repair operates a fleet of pool cars with a dedicated driver, thus wherever we collect from, we must be allowed to leave one of our pool vehicles either in your business car park / parking spot, or if in a residential area, at your house or on the road with a permission if necessary. We'd appreciate it if you could keep this in mind when making a booking for our free collection and delivery service.
