Tyre/Wheel Balancing

Tyre/Wheel Balancing

One of the most often asked questions we get in our centres is if wheel balancing and wheel alignment are the same thing. After all, they sound fairly similar and both help your tyre's long-term health. Balancing and alignment are two distinct procedures, with balancing focusing on the distribution of weight around the wheel and alignment focusing on the position of the wheels in respect to the road and one another. It's easy to mix the two up, so let's take a deeper look at each one and the advantages they may provide for you and your vehicle.

Wheel balancing machines ensures that the tyre rotates evenly and that the weight is distributed evenly across the wheel. Small balancing weights are added to the rim to compensate for weight irregularities. When you add a big weight to one side of a set of balance scales, the scales will tip. If you then add a number of smaller, less heavy things to the other side, the scales will gradually begin to tilt as you add more, until the scales ultimately level out after you have added enough lesser weights. If you add too many weights, the scales will tip in the opposite direction.

Although this is a simplified illustration, wheel balancing works in the same way, and if an imbalance is detected on one side of the wheel, wheel weights are added to the opposite side to balance the weight distribution. To have the optimum riding comfort, it's critical to fix any wheels that aren't balanced properly. When travelling at a particular speed, incorrectly balanced wheels produce a vibration that is felt through the steering wheel and can cause significant pain over time. Furthermore, balancing difficulties can lead to premature tyre, suspension, and steering component wear.

What is the purpose of wheel balancing?

At the point of sale, tyres are measured again on a balancing machine, and corrective weights are inserted to offset the combined impact of the tyre and wheel imbalance. If the driver notices significant vibration after purchase, the tyres may need to be rebalanced.

What happens if a tyre is not balanced?

When the wheel assembly isn't balanced, your tyre may wear out early and you may experience some unpleasant vibrations. Even a quarter ounce of unbalance can exert unequal pressure on the treads, resulting in uneven tread wear and excessive heat, both of which reduce the tyre's life.

What does it feel like to have a tyre that is out of balance?

Uneven and rapid tread wear, poor fuel efficiency, vibration in the steering wheels and a noise that grows worse at higher speeds are all classic indications of an out of balance tyre. You'll probably experience vibration in the steering wheel if a front tyre isn't balanced properly.

Is it vital to balance your tyres?

Wheel alignment, which incorporates the angle of the alloy wheels and their relationship to the ground, is not the same as tyre balance. Your tyres lose balance as you drive, therefore a tyre balancing service is required on a regular basis to restore optimum balance. Tyre imbalance may be problematic for the vehicle as well as the tyres.

Is it necessary to balance a new tyre?

The wheels must be balanced once the tyres are mounted. If this isn't done, the replacement tyre will most likely roll unevenly, generating a variety of issues for the driver and vehicle, most notably when the steering wheel rattles and rocks back and forth at certain speeds. A wheel balancing equipment is provided at all Car Service and Repair locations to balance your wheels. The tyre and wheel assembly are installed on the machine, which rotates the wheel to calculate even the smallest weight variation throughout the wheel. The balancing machine then indicates where a counterweight should be added and what size weights should be used to balance the wheel appropriately.
